They tend to work great. I listed the norwegian method in the article under the VO2 max section. I just wouldn't do 4 x 4's without a solid aerobic base. Depending on your sport/activity you're optimizing for, you'd also want to mix in higher intensity shorter intervals. But generally speaking, if you did some zone 2-3 and some threshold training (4 x 4's or other) you'd be decently well rounded if your goals are pretty generalist and non athletic oriented. I am still a fan of being as flexible/adaptable as possible so still mixing in different time domains wouldn't be a bad option.
